"Sorry" Doesn’t Return What’s Stolen –– Photomontage –– Aluminum & Archival Paper Prints

Regular price $46.00

About this Piece

Stolen land, stolen lives, stolen freedoms, and stolen from home. Words alone do not return what is stolen.

This piece was inspired by handmade signs and graffiti made in Portland, Oregon during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. I walked and explored the city taking photographs to capture this historic time. Amongst many strong messages asking for justice, I saw “Stolen Land” tags painted on the crosswalks, “Say His Name” and “Say Her Name” was on benches and walls, “No Justice, No Peace”, was written everywhere...then, out of the blue, I came upon a message that said, “I’m Sorry” written in a thin marker over a white-washed wall. The message felt genuine, but it wasn’t enough. It all prompted me to blend these messages with a map of the original Native American territories with their traditional, self-given names. The people were needed to put a face to the messages.

The artwork is available in two formats:

1) Printed on a metal panel (aluminum):

These will be produced as limited editions of 3 sizes (see below). Once the edition has been purchased, no other pieces will be made in this medium at this size.

Here industrial UV-coated inks are printed directly on aluminum, creating a deeper, more translucent layered look which also allows the imagery's detail to pop so well off the surface. In this piece, I chose a white background to allow the vivid colors to reflect off the piece.

This piece is ready to hang with a framed, wire-backed hanger. It floats 1/2 inch off the wall. Below see the Left Room photo to see how it looks.

Metal Panel Prints are made to order. Please allow 10-14 days for shipping.

2) Archival Paper Pigment Print:

I use Museum-grade, 100% cotton rag, 250 gsm paper. Printed with an Epson SureColor P5000 and 11 UltraChrome HDX Pigment Inks that ensure visibility of the smallest details, and colors that appear as fresh as day one, even after 100 years. These are open editions.
