Typically my photomontage work depicts the best of cities…I celebrate our urban landscape and how it reflects our culture and our shared experience. I love walking the city streets and capturing the spirit of the community by photographing architecture, landmarks, marquees, public art, theaters, and stores. But, over the last number of years I started to question how our cities are really built, who's really in charge, who really has the funds, who has been cut out of the process, who has been displaced, and how is all of society truly supported. Then 2020 hit with a pandemic, policing disputes, fires, and it showed a lack of government support and organization. This was a pivotal year to clearly reveal that our governmental, financial, healthcare, educational, and other institutions are not really made to serve the people - they just serve each other. They are not supporting thriving culture for everyone and not concerned about protecting us during catastrophic events. So, who can you call to help? So, now I am using my photomontage medium to depict this systemic failure clearly exposed in 2020 and use urban iconography as a language help visualize what is happening in the United States. I started this series out as part of processing what is happening, but also in hope that we can learn from from this year and start to create better, more supportive systems.
